A reading programme based on free-reading at KS3. Rather than online testing or comprehension questions, the programme relies on a range of writing activities linked to reading, along with the minimum expectation of 20/30 minutes reading per night. It uses the Rosenshine principles of retrieval practice, alongside promoting tier 2 vocabulary and inference skills. This is based on students having a bi-weekly lesson; this SOW has sessions planned for our Autumn term, but also has a template for lesson prompts and writing tasks.I have printed and laminated these, to make packs for use by students whilst teachers monitor engagement with reading through their writing tasks.... This SOW is meant to increase pupils' cultural capital. It starts with the general information about literature, introduces literary timeline, explains how literary canon is created. It then moves to Ancient Greece the development of writing, Homer, the philosophers, Aesop's fables - oral tradition. Next there is the study of the Greek theatre - Antigone by Sophocles. Then, we move on to study the Bible and link it to the story of creation in the GreekMythology. After that there is the closer look at the Medieval Period -Chaucer, The Renaissance and Paradise Lost, and finally the Romantics and poetry. This SOW included the baseline assessment (lesson to introduce as well) and the end of unit assessment (the Romanticism). There are 6 core lessons and some of the suggested lessons - it is a work in progress and I will upload all lessons at the end of this half term.... MORE

This is a list of events that I organised for a whole school literacy day called 'Everybody Writes'. As we were a small school, I was able to create three separate workshops across the day for each pupil in the school. I wanted to make the point that 'writing' isn't just something you have to do at school, but a skill that stays with you for life. I also wanted to include the local business community, so contacted various companies to see what they could offer. I hope this list of ideas might be useful to anyone who is considering planning something similar. Don't hesitate to contact me if you want to know any more.... MORE
