The idea grew out of making links to contemporary songs to use as a way in to discussing themes, ideas, concepts and character mindset in Macbeth. Found that it was also good for getting ideas of context across. The lyrics of some songs work really well with key scenes in the play Crazy for sleepwalking scene and Viva La Vida for She should have died hereafter soliloquy. I divide the class into teams. Someone from each team comes up and looks at my theme map for 10 seconds only. The task is for the group to recreate the theme map I have produced as accurately as possible. I usually tally how many times they come up and then we vote on the most similar. A 22 minute recorded lecture on birds of prey and bird imagery in Macbeth: eagles, falcons, owls, kites. Covers a good range of AO3 context as well as detailed analysis of the connotations of the different birds, with assumed knowledge of the whole play. Probably best for higher ability, though middle ability could manage some of it chunked down.It is accompanied by a set of images, "Macbeth, Birds of Prey Images" with the key quotations and AOs included on them.Recommended usage: have students listen and take notes in Cornell Notes format, with pauses to discuss/ ask questions.
